Elementalist

June 28, 2012 at 11:44 (Uncategorized)

I love elemental magic so I was very surprised when the first time I tried to watch Avatar:  The Last Airbender I didn’t enjoy it at all.  I watched a couple of episodes thinking I should be enjoying this, the concepts are great.  I love them, in fact.  I put it down to my mindset at the time.  I have recently watched it and enjoyed it immensely.   Not only the elemental magic but the animals as well – they are so awesome.  Take for example the turtle duck:

How cute it that!?  My favourite is the cat owl –

What I really like is that they are there, end of story.  There’s no explanations as to why or how.  In this world there are these animals, that’s it.  Pictures are from here.

A different kind of pizza

June 25, 2012 at 22:28 (Uncategorized)

I ended up covering an afternoon class today.  And I just remembered something funny – it might only be funny if you were in the class…

We were talking about food and a guy was trying to ask for the word ‘dough’ so he spoke about pizza – I got it and gave him ‘dough’.  Initially, he couldn’t get it right – he kept saying ‘dope’.  I was trying really hard not to completely burst into fits of giggles.

It wasn’t really all that funny.  And I was the only one laughing.

It’s 22h30 and I’m really awake – it’s weird.  I’m usually asleep by now.  Sleeping late in the morning has changed my nighttime sleeping pattern.  I think really odd thoughts late at time.

Also, I have really creative spelling this time of night.  It doesn’t resemble anything it should.  But I corrected it for your reading pleasure 🙂

Kitchen Cat

June 21, 2012 at 14:24 (Uncategorized)

If ever I need to find Dorian all I need to do is kick the stone ball across the kitchen floor, scrumple a piece of paper at the back door, open the fridge, start making food, put the kettle on, put something in the sink or open the kitchen cupboard and he’s there in a shot.  Calling him is ineffective, does not respond at all.

In two weeks I will be in Finland – I can’t wait.  Busy finishing up last minute things like my new fencing hood [last one failed the punch test].  Also need to collect a few things like a bigger memory card from Aki.  I don’t have work next week, which is both nice and not so nice.  Not so nice – I don’t get paid leave.  I have never yet got paid leave, it is something I would like to experience.  Nice – I could really do with a break.  I feel like I’ve been going and going endlessly, bouncing between ups and downs and just shy of bursting into to tears.  At the moment, I’m really more focused on the nice 🙂

Bad Day

June 15, 2012 at 08:06 (Uncategorized)

Yesterday wasn’t a good day in terms of things happening.  For the first half of the week I was pretty down emotionally but yesterday [and today] I was feeling pretty good – sorted some stuff out in my head.  It was test day for my students and I wanted to put together a test specifically on the work we had done so fat this week.

Only, Metrorail Metrofail was having issues.  As usual, I should say.  So after spending 50 minutes on the station waiting for a train I got to work rather cold and annoyed.  And the printer wasn’t working – out of order.  I also had less than an hour to prepare two test – one, the first one, was easy, just photocopying but the other I had to copy pages, cut out sections and paste them to other pages and make copies.  I made it in time but I was rushed, but pleased with what I had put together.

That is until one of the students pointed out that the reading text in the first test had a line running through it and you couldn’t read it – I mean, I could read it but it’s not for me.  So I had to make a copy of the answer sheet, black out the answers and make extra copies for the other students.  The second test, my test, was okay.  And then it was the end of the working day and I was happy.

The day then picked up when I found The Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer in Shoprite for R30. The afternoon took a dip when my hair dying didn’t work as I wanted and my cupcakes failed – what a mess that was.  I made a second batch – moogle cupcakes.   I took the idea from someone else – Square Enix EU retweeted someone’s moogle cupcake picture.  They were so cute, I had to make them.  My day ended with an awesome good dinner with friends.  Rough start but it ended well.

In my continued Japanese studies, I’m tempted to write this out in Japanese but I feel an attack of Laziness coming on…

Nightly Rituals

June 9, 2012 at 09:53 (Uncategorized)

Most evenings Dorian follows a pattern.  As I get into bed and settle down he attacks my feet through the blanket.

He really gets into it, squashing his whisker pillows so much they block his nose.  Then he really works himself up into a frenzy.  It’s impossible to photograph.

He doesn’t keep this up long but it’s manic.  When he was younger, he would pass out asleep where he stood – it was very cute.  Now that he is almost seven months old, he goes to chill in the passage.

And with it being winter, the show is watched over by Polo while he sits among the pillows.  With all his disapproval.

Overall I’m somewhat impressed with the quality of my phone’s camera.  I can’t do things like zoom but there’s an app for that if I seriously got into phone camera photography.  And considering I have a camera in my bag, it’s unlikely.

I am so pleased the last two weeks are finished.  I had two students who did not talk.  They would answer a direct questions with as few words as possible – yes, no and sometimes just a shrug or nod.  I was beginning to despair, until I spoke to their afternoon teacher, a much more experienced teacher, and she was having the same problems.  I don’t think I’m a bad teacher but it was nice to know that sometimes no matter what you do, there’s nothing you can do.  Added to this was a lingering non-cold which appears to have disappeared this morning.

Life saving shoes

June 1, 2012 at 16:23 (Uncategorized)

Too dramatic.  But my shoes did save me from some pain.

I bought these shoes because I thought they were cool, and they reminded me of Kingdom Hearts.  Someone at work said they looked like racing boots, which made me think of The Stig.  Then friends called them moon boots – all round they are awesome shoes.  And this afternoon they added to their awesomeness by protecting me from the crazy trolley pushing lady behind me.  She appeared to only know when to stop when her trolley bumped into me.

Here is an awesome trailer…  http://eu.square-enix.com/en/blog/kingdom-hearts-3d-e3-2012-trailer  It looks really exciting.
