WWII

I’m amazed at how often, when dealing with things that began in early 19th Century, I’ll come across completely arbitrary facts about WWII.  For example – Meccano was unavailable for the last two years of the war because the government banned the sale of new or second-hand metal toys.  I think when something is so instrumental in changing society, you can’t help but find it in everything.

I can to a realisation about Japanese yesterday afternoon – I don’t really want to do it anymore.  I had wanted to become a translator but after six years of study I’m still in the basics.  I had though that it was something I could do much later in life, say after retirement, but I’m finding I want to spend my time on other things.  I am still terribly keen on Japan and Japanese, I just… I had an idea and it isn’t working out.  Maybe I pick it up again later, maybe I don’t but right now, I feel quite relieved that it’s no longer this thing I have to organise myself around.
