Completely mad!

August 30, 2009 at 23:56 (Uncategorized)

I’ve just finished proofing a script.  It was going okay until I realised that two of the pages hadn’t been translated.  I was working with the Japanese RAW and the translator was working with the Chinese RAW, which had the missing pages.  So between me reading out the hiragana and him working on the kanji, we got it sorted.

Being involved with scanlating makes me realise all the work that goes into it and into translating.  It also points out the skills I should aquire and how to use them.

Now, I shall post this before it’s actually Monday…

ftp

August 29, 2009 at 15:42 (Uncategorized)

I’ve learnt so much about internet and computers in the last three weeks.  Yesterday was ftp.  It was also a day of internet hunting – it started with information hunting on Kandachime so I could complete the proof.  Then, because there is next to nothing on Kandachime out there, it went to information hunting on ftp so I could get the RAW and the required information.  That lead to confusion so I read the manga.  But only got half the information.  After some help, again, last night I got it sorted and the proof was done.  Only 14 hours later…

Kandachime is so so – so so art, so so story.  Nothing really sticks out but it’s not terrible to look at or to read.  I doubt I would read it out of my own but am happy enough to work on it.

What I am less than happy about is the weather.  It has yet to get cold – there have been chilly days but on the whole the weather has not been winter.  And I miss it.

Ice Over Road

August 23, 2009 at 20:37 (Uncategorized)

I was chatting on the Air Gear thread at Mangahelpers – saying I prefer skating on ice more than the road; ‘ice over road anyday’.  And then I thought, what an awesome name for a Road, Ice Over Road.

But what is the name of the regalia…

Blazer Drive

August 21, 2009 at 23:05 (Uncategorized)

More Blazer Drive proofing tonight but I had RAWs to work with – much easier if slightly longer to do.  And I think… were I to start BD from the beginning… I might actually read it.  I really like the art.  But with the bits of story I know… I don’t know if I would.  I read DeathNote for the art and I don’t think I want to read another manga because I like the art.  I think my current ‘reading’ of BD is sufficient.  I still get to look at the art.

But right now – I’m really tired.

Thoughts on copies

August 19, 2009 at 11:47 (Uncategorized)

I’ve been thinking about plagiarism…

When I first heard of plagiarism in manga, I couldn’t see how.  I had an idea that maybe it was copying a story line – the thought went as follows:  a direct copy would be wrong, however, some art styles are so similar that plagiarism would have to be in the story.  The manga I read all have similar generic elements in their art – it’s what I like about them – but each manga has little tells that make it unique to the artist.  If those tells are copied; I think that is plagiarism.  Then I saw what people meant… It’s like tracing.  Even if the story is original, it’s cheating.  Disappointed.

But then I’m disappointed with any form of plagiarism.  I mean, I would be upset if someone passed off my stuff as their own but my main emotion would be disappointment – can there truly be no new ideas?  No original thought?  Build on an idea, sure; but don’t just copy it.

A copy is just a copy – it has nothing of its own; no power to expand horizons and no feelings to evoke…

Except maybe Copy Ninja Kakashi 😛

Laughter

August 18, 2009 at 17:03 (Uncategorized)

Sometimes the joke is not that funny but it calls on things from the past and that is what makes it funny.

But other times the joke is just funny from the start.

New manga

August 16, 2009 at 15:57 (Uncategorized)

A recommendation that is awesome – Break Blade.  Good art, snappy text, funny and catching storyline – pretty much everything I want in a manga.  It falls a bit flat in the use of camera angles and movement isn’t depictedthat well but it’s fine, you still get what’s going on.    Alchemist had me chewing my lip again at the chapter close.  There was no WSJ and no Air Gear this week…

I’m trying out my hand at translating again – GrimReaper; it’s like Bleach in so many ways.  And I’m finding the latest Bleach filler strangely enjoyable.

There are a couple of things that happen in MB on the weekends.  Saturday mornings have almost a festive feel as you walk down the main street.  Everyone is dressed in their best, eating icecream and swinging shopping bags.  The lower end income stores have speakers on the streets pushing out 90’s ballads and romantic songs from movies.  Everyone is happy – it’s Saturday morning.  Saturday afternoons are quite – most of the shops are closed.  And on Sunday, they are all closed.  But even if they were open, no one would be shopping.  MB people are church people and the bells ring all Sunday morning.  Then it’s relative visiting with lunch.  Every weekend is the same – and I do mean every weekend.

Wielding keys

August 13, 2009 at 19:45 (Uncategorized)

Some days are a wonder – a wonder how I actually managed to get where I was needed.  Getting to piano was interesting.

Usually when I leave the house, it’s a one stop of picking up wallet, phone and keys.  Except I ended up making three trips for said items.  After packing them in my bag, I realised the garage was still locked – keys come out and garage opened.  Bike taken out but couldn’t find the bike lock key.  House keys came back out of the bag but I couldn’t find the lock key in the house; back to garage – no luck.  Time is now running short.  But while staring at the bike wondering what to do, I spy the key in the lock – great.  But I’m still not ready to go – did I lock up stairs?  And if I didn’t, would anyone try and get it?

Key back out, back in house, run up stairs – door locked.  Back down stairs and out the door.  Lock door and bag keys.  Hop on bike, hop off bike, take out keys and open gate.  Bag keys, hop on bike.  Ride like mad – made the trip in 15 minutes but I had to sit on the step for a moment and remember how to breath.  I needed a keyblade – Oblivion would have been nice.
