Hikaru no Go

March 31, 2008 at 15:43 (Uncategorized)

I realised today (after the entire day of reading) why I’m so drawn to Hikaru no Go.  Yes, the artwork is good and I’m learning stuff about Go but the true reason is the character development and how the artwork reflects that development.  It is awesome and why I read so many manga but abandon them, characters that don’t grow are boring.  No matter how great the story is or innovated the artwork is, if the character does not grow there is nothing for me to read.

A favourite character will also keep me there for a period of time and Bleach has ended the endless fighting with a week to spare (before I gave up on it).

I also hit on the idea that comics are narrative text and the latest Batman run is awesome – Jason is so cool even though he kills people.  ‘Face the Face’ and ‘Under the Hood’ are great – the artwork is fantastic and the stories gripping.   And best of all they are funny and clever.

Cosplish

This is an awesome idea – learn English in cosplay.  A school where students (and tutors) dress in cosplay while learning to speak English – not English for the sake of study but English to be able to communicate on an informal level.  Awesome!
This is great because people like to talk about things they enjoy.  So if you are learning a new language, people tend to learn about things they like faster than others e.g. I can talk more about manga in Japanese than I can order a meal or make a reservation at a hotel.  Tadal, who is German, can talk endlessly (she bets me) about FF and manga but can’t really understand a movie like ‘The Prestige’.  I like the idea so much.

Bleach and Naruto come out today – I can’t wait; I’ve been feeling really crap these last few day (sinus infection) and today my face is not sore but I don’t want to risk it by going skating this evening.

It’s so cute…

http://www.softbankmobile.co.jp/ja/news/press/2008/20080227_01/

I couldn’t find the article in English but I got this from Japan Times Online (the link is from there as well):

Softbank is targeting a new market with a more playful mobile phone. The new line of handsets, the 815T PB from Toshiba, have arms and legs that fold out, giving them the look of miniature robots. The screens also display faces, according to their moods, and send text messages to you to reveal their innermost thoughts. Otherwise pretty standard clamshell handsets, they weigh a bit over 100 grams and come in silver and black. A cute touch for the young at heart, they come out April 2 with no word yet on pricing.

… though I’m not sure I want one – it’s just cute to look at.

Go

March 25, 2008 at 11:35 (Uncategorized)

The game.

I’ve started playing Go last week (or Igo as the Japanese call it).  The rules are really simple but the complex part is winning.  Because of this I attempted Hikaru no Go (manga) again; or rather started reading from the beginning.  I once bought a Shounen Jump because it was on special and read some Hikaru no Go that was in it – initial reaction was BO-RING!  One, it was a ‘sport’ manga and two, I didn’t know what the hell they were playing.  But I did (and do) like the mangaka (artist).  So now that I know how to play, I tried it again.  It’s still not riveting stuff but it’s a cool way to learn the game and the artwork is good.

Actually, I say that but I spent the entire long weekend reading it…

Again

March 21, 2008 at 12:00 (Uncategorized)

Once again I find myself waiting for my weekly manga.  This last week has gone by in such a blur of theories and annoyances (of theories).  But all assignments for March are in – YOKATTA!

Japanese was a bit of a disaster this week – I hadn’t looked at most the work need for the lesson; been too busy with other stuff.  There are just two lesson before Sensei goes on his annual Japan visit for six weeks.  Oh, I started playing Go last week – it’s rather easy to learn but difficult to win (at least at the moment).  It fun enough though.

After a some number of years I have a complete ‘Knightfall’ Batman series.  I read them years ago, the first time I was in England so… eight years ago and now it is complete 🙂  I still have to complete ‘Akira’ but they are expensive 😦

Fiction note:  I’m hoping to get some work done on Meteora this weekend but I did write a oneshot for XII on Tuesday.  I’m toying (again) with my much neglected Batman idea.

Still no Alchemist!

March 13, 2008 at 23:37 (Uncategorized)

It is almost the 14th and there is no still Alchemist RAW… waiting so patiently with sighs of disappointment and not irritation.  Hopefully tomorrow – but there will also be Naruto (yay) and Bleach (we’ll see about ‘yay’) if nothing else.

I’ve started Narrative Text – enjoyable.  I’m running out of time for Assignment 2 to be handed in on time.  The Poetic Text is draining my enthusiasm for all that is poetry.  I will return to if after I’ve handed in Assignment 2.  Dramatic Text doesn’t look promising either 😦

Been reading entries for the Romance Horror – thus far only one poem has made it into horror genre.  Most are either crime or human drama; horrific events but not horror.  The poem was about a girl (I guess) and her anger at a cheating ex that also involved her pulling back his flesh and eating him.  All in a poetic turn, of course.  So far they get my vote for being in genre.  I’ve got a few move to read before Sunday and cast my vote.

Trees

March 9, 2008 at 14:52 (Uncategorized)

I climbed a tree to rescue a cat yesterday.  Only after I volunteered did it occur to me that I might not be in the best shape for the mission but it was fine.  Got up and down with no problem – though getting up was way easier.

Bleach appears to be moving forwards – yay!  I really don’t think I could have sat through another power up chapter.  I was reading a forum post about the latest Naruto chapter and the no-shirt-no-jutsu.  It’s the ninja version of the hero ending up shirtless in a fight.  There were also comments about a full-frontal-no-jutsu and going blind if someone wasn’t already doing so.

I wanted to write another manga review today but really can’t get my energy together for it, I’ve been working on some fiction instead.  A short story: http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2486353/1/Eternally_sleeping
